This workshop will explore potential conflict between child protection and youth rights, as outlined in article 13 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child: “The child shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds.” The workshop will look at the tension between child protection and child rights. While it is necessary to protect children from harm, it’s also necessary to protect their rights of free expression which, as outlined by article 13 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, includes “freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds,” in any media, including social media. What does this say about the use of filters and monitoring technology at home and in school or restrictions on children’s rights to participate in social media.

Inclusiveness of the Session
This will be a highly interactive panel with strong audience and remote participation. We are planning to include not only young people on the panel but also in front row of the audience so they can be called on to participate.
Suitability for Remote Participation
We will encourage youth groups in different countries to participate remotely. We plan to publicize this even through our various online forums and make sure it is Tweeted. Larry (the lead organizer) will encourage his 125,000 Facebook followers and a large Twitter following to participate in addition to those he reaches through his website, SafeKids.com. Other panelists will be encouraged to promote the event and remote participation as well.
